A named destination is the end point of a link represented by text in the Destinations tab. Destinations enable you to set navigation paths across a collection of Adobe PDF documents. Linking to a destination is recommended when linking across documents because, unlike a link to a page, a link to a destination is not affected by the addition or deletion of pages within the target document. Destinations can be used in bookmarks, links and other navigation elements instead of page numbers. Essentially, Destination is an alias for a specific page view within a document. If you want to change a destination page or display parametes of a link or bookmark without breaking or changing internal and external links, then you have to use named destinations.

Creating named destinations can be a very time consuming and tedious task. The AutoBookmark™ plug-in provides a variety of functions that can significantly simply and speedup this process. The software provides functionality to convert all links or bookmark actions to use named destinations instead of direct page numbers by automatically creating named destinations that correspond to existing link actions. For example, if you have bookmarks “Introduction” (points to page 2) and “Overview” (points to page 5), then the plug-in can automatically create 2 new named destinations (“Introduction” and “Overview”) and convert bookmarks to use it instead of page numbers. You can also automatically create bookmarks from existing destinations ('Plug-in > Bookmarks > Create From Named Destinations...' menu).
The plug-in provides the following functions that support named destinations:
- “Plug-in > Destinations > Create From Links…”
These functions are also available from “Links” and “Bookmarks” menus:
- “Plug-ins > Links > Convert to Named Destinations…”
The plug-in supports Adobe Acrobat batch processing framework and adds the following batch commands:
- 'Bookmarks Create Bookmarks From Named Destinations'
- 'Bookmarks Convert To Named Destinations'
- 'Links Convert To Use Named Destinations'
